A Difference of Opinion.
This week we came across a difference of opinion with our Traps and we thought we would explain why we make our cage traps to way we do. We do always like to be right but we understand that in some circumstances you must call a difference of opinion, offer help where possible and move forward.
A member of the opposing team questioned as to why our Traps have a mesh bottom as some people think the mesh is uncomfortable for an animal and could panic them once caught. They thought a cage trap would be better with a solid bottom. We think the opposite. Our traps are not designed to hold an animal in them for a long period of time, they have been designed to capture an animal for safe onward transportation.
A mesh base means Our traps are;
- Much, much lighter to carry whilst still incredibly strong
- Safer trapping in very hot OR cold weather (a major consideration if you use a solid base trap as paws could be harmed in extremes of temperature)
- Gives more resistance for the animal to stand without slipping. (solid floors allow the animal to slide unbalancing the trap when lifted)
- Easier to disguise in long grass, less conspicuous, avoids unwelcome attention from others
- Simple to clean & disinfect between catches (particularly if doing multiple rescues)
We have been manufacturing cage traps for 25 years and are prepared to change them if we feel a design isn’t working to its full potential. Top Tip for one of our cage traps.
Place the trap down on grass or gravel surface and rub it back and forth a few times. As the surface moves over the mesh it will help to disguise the trap for an easier capture.
